Is it a double standard for single dads?

June 21 is Father’s Day 2009 and on my Sunday weekly talk show at 9am, “The Power of One Voice” (I’m always streaming live 9am) www.iPower921.com. I asked the question, do you think it is a double standard for single dads?

These questions are not referring to the dead beats. Why are the court systems so unfair towards men? Why do women use children as pawns? What do you say to the women who DON’T allow the father to see his kids? Why is it easier for a woman to get assistance from the government, but when a man is the single parent with custody he has to go through many obstacles? Please leave a comment.

I fell in love with a man with kids and I realize through personal experience that men are held to a double standard as single fathers. It was our greatest joy to have custody of one of his kids, but I saw that the mother (who I thought should know more than anyone the expenses involved in raising a growing child) did not financially conribute as much as what the father had to pay in child support. So, when the child looks to us for a toy, program, or other happiness we can’t afford (because we pay rent, bills, school, clothes, entertainment, and groceries for the child) and his mother doesn’t get it, it hurts my heart. What should we do?

If I were the father in this case, I’d feel somewhat fearful to bring it up, because I would know that I’d be criticized for not being able to provide for all the wants and needs of my child. What about the mother, though??

In the black community the father is absent oftentimes. There is a generational change in acceptable behavior. My dads generation got married and then had children, or married the woman they had children with. There are more birth control options than ever before. But in he black community it seems ok to have a bunch of children and not be married. Even in the church it is not uncommon to see 15 and 16 year old girls pregnant. I do not feel any sympathy for fathers or mothers who do not provide for the children. I can ride through many inner city neighborhoods and see men hanging out on the corner all day. The system does have flaws, but use protection if you are not ready to parent & provide. Men and women are accountable for the choices they make.
