Have you ever wondered what is it like mentally for a Navy Seal in the heat of battle?
Have you ever thought about the mental effects a special force officer has to cope with after the battle?
On June 22, 2014 I had an opportunity to interview a 22 year combat veteran, retired navy Seal Mikal Vega.
What so interesting about Vega was that he was awarded the Bronze Star with valor twice for heroic achievement, courage and exceptional leadership.
Mikal Vega was featured in the documentary PSYCHIATRY IN THE MILITARY: THE HIDDEN ENEMY—FULL DOCUMENTARY. He was put on a cocktail of psychiatric pills and became extremely ill. In his own words:
“I’d made it through combat in multiple firefights and nothing. I got blown up by an
IED, it broke my neck… Made it through all of that, I come back and they almost kill me
with pills.
During the interview, Mikal shared some very graphic details of things he seen while on several tours during active duty.
He also shared what it was like coming home from active duty and not being able to sleep for four days straight.
Then the military decided to put him on psychotropic drugs, which he said just made things worse. At one point he was on at least 13 different drugs.
The most fascinating fact he mentioned during the interview is that he realized it wasn’t mental issues like the doctors were telling him. He found out that it was hormones.
Long story short, Vega weaned himself off all psychiatric drugs and founded an organization called Vital Warrior, a non-profit that utilizes non-pharmaceutical methodologies to help veterans and their families recover from wartime trauma.
Enjoy the interview and share!
