Marijuana: Legal or Illegal?

First let me begin this blog by stating that I am not a smoker. However, during my late teenage years, during and after college I would “partake” quite frequently. Nonetheless, there has been an ongoing discussion about the legalization of marijuana.

With a struggling economy and health care troubling most U.S. citizens the argument has become more of a meaningful topic. One reason is for medicinal purposes. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled against medical use of marijuana, but emphasized the decision was not over whether marijuana is effective for pain relief, in June 2005.

13 states that have legalized marijuana for medical purposes are; Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington. The question came up against those who use it for recreational purposes, why should they want it to be legal. Well I question why not, if they are using this for medicinal purposes. They are not using alcohol for medicinal purposes. If I needed aspirin for pain and take an ounce of pills, they would have to pump my stomach, but if I smoke an ounce of weed the side effects would not be as harmful.

Another point that people bring up is the harmful effects of drugs that doctors prescribe are not only legal but lethal. Which opens up the debate, should marijuana be legalized?

I think that recreational use should be legal so that non-smokers can benefit from marijuana as well and so everyone can share in the wealth. http://stonerdiary.wordpress.com

I think it should be legal! Y not legalize it? If they legalize weed then they can tax it and treat it like they do alcohol. Just like alcohol the government should make it illegal to smoke and drive and u can’t work under the influence. My father died from alcohol and I wish to this day that he would’ve smoked weed instead. The power weed has over the hood is ridiculous…if they legalize it and make it available in the store then it would take that power away! No one will shoot each other over something they can walk to the store n get. I say let the people smoke! I smoked for a while and I don’t anymore but I really don’t think people are gonna wild out like people think they will. Just because alcohol is legal doesn’t mean everyone drinks! Weed to me is less harmful then prescription drugs and has way less side effects. And just like the government put side effects on the side of a pack of cigarettes and alcohol they could do weed the same way! But this is all just my opinion!
