UPDATED—March 19, 2015 · In the wake of the announcement by four leading European nations — Germany, France, Italy, and Great Britain — that they intend to join the Chinese-initiated Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), the growing international campaign for the United States to follow suit and join the BRICS, as called for in the Schiller Institute petition, has become more timely and urgent than ever. The latest signators on this petition include a member of the Italian Senate, Senator Stefano Candiani; a member of the Lombardy Regional Council, Pietro Foroni; the former Mayor of Potsdam, Germany, Brunhilde Hanke; the Secretary General of the Mexican National Federation of Organized Trade Unions (FENASO), Jesus E. Ramirez Diaz; two former municipal presidents from Mexico, Manuel Ignacio Espinoza Gonzalez and Casimiro Navarro Valenzuela; a prominent Austrian economics and business journalist, Eva Pfisterer; and a professor of economics at Lewis and Clark College, Eric Tymoigne.
Now totaling over 285 names, the list of endorsements includes other prominent politicians, businessman, academics, scientists and artists from over twenty countries, who have all publicly endorsed this resolution calling on the U.S. and Europe to collaborate with the BRICS nations in the interest of peace and economic development. The resolution, sponsored by the Schiller Institute, was issued in response to the offer of China’s President Xi Jinping for the United States to join China’s New Silk Road development program and abandon the policies of confrontation with particularly Russia and China.
